Sanhsia is famous not only for its Chingshui Tsushih Temple but also for the offering of "divine pigs" that takes place there every year on the sixth day of the first lunar month. Seeking peace and prosperity from the gods, worshippers lay out pigs weighing nearly 1,000 kilograms. Gold medals are hung from their necks, colorful lanterns are set out, and gongs and drums reverberate through the air-every year the scene attracts tens of thousands of spectators from Taiwan and abroad.
Many Taiwanese make a trip to a temple during the lunar new year holiday to pray for an auspicious new year. Here's to good fortune in the Year of the Rat!
