Protection (Yu Baohua)

The historic Bao’an Temple in the Dalongdong area of Taipei is simple and elegant in form, and the artifacts there have great artistic value. As a center of popular faith where many festival activities are held, the temple attracts an endless stream of believers.

Lungshan Temple, Lukang (Wu Jiaren)

Lungshan Temple in Changhua’s Lukang Township is dedicated to the Bodhisattva Guanyin, and draws a constant stream of believers. The well-preserved structure is Taiwan’s largest Longshan Temple and a Grade 1 national historic site.

Xincheng Catholic Church (Chen Qixuan)

Xincheng Catholic Church in Hualien County, built in 1956, has the sacred dignity found in Western places of worship. The walls are overgrown with vines, and the building is shaped like a ship, which is why it has been called a Taiwanese Noah’s Ark.

Son et Lumière at Zhongshan Hall (Chen Meixiu)

Zhongshan Hall in downtown Taipei was Taiwan’s first conference and exhibition hall. Completed in 1936, it was designed by the famous Japanese architect Kaoru Ide. In this photo, people are enjoying a historical light show projected onto the building.

Happy New Year to Taiwan’s Oldest Church (Chen Ziqing)

The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Wanjin, Pingtung County, was built by the Spanish Catholic missionary Fernando Sainz in the 1860s. It is the oldest existing Christian church in Taiwan.

Beitou Hot Spring Museum (Xiao Ruling)

At the Beitou Hot Spring Museum the afternoon sun angles onto the tatami mats indoors, while the verandah is lined with classic Japanese lanterns. This revitalized old building is well worth a visit.

Beimen and the Taipei Post Office Building (Xiao Qingliang)

After a rainstorm, two cyclists pass between Beimen (North Gate) and the Japanese-era Taipei Post Office building. A large pool of rainwater on the ground reflects these two historic structures, making for a harmoniously beautiful scene.

A Traditional Sanheyuan (Huang Huiqin)

Sanheyuan—three-sided residential compounds, usually comprising a main hall and two wings—are a traditional form of housing in Taiwan. These old homes are a precious part of Taiwan’s heritage and embody the relationship between people and nature. The photo captures a local farmer going about his daily routine.
