The ruling Kuomintang Feb. 15 nominated its chairman, Premier Chiang Ching-kuo, as the party's candidate for the Sixth Presidential election to be held march 21. In recommending Chairman Chiang as the party's presidential candidate, President Yen Chia-kan said: "Comrade Chiang Ching-kuo, the present Chairman of the Party and President of the Executive Yuan, has followed our Tsungtsai, the late President Chiang Kai-shek, and practiced faithfully the teachings of the Tsungli, Dr. Sun Yat-sen, for as long as 40 years. His dedication, integrity, determination, loyalty and meritorious accomplishments are unexcelled. Since taking over the presidency of the Executive Yuan and the Chairmanship of the party, he has presided over our great national planning, implemented the policies of our party, carried out major construction projects and coped with international changes. His masterful strategy and total dedication have gained popular support and his virtuous simplicity and informality have won unanimous respect and applause at home and abroad." The Kuomintang Feb. 16 nominated Taiwan Governor Shieh Tung-min as the party's vice-presidential candidate to run with Chairman Chiang Ching-kuo.
Governor Shieh comes from Chang-hua County in Taiwan province. At the age of 20, he joined the resistance against Japanese rule, but could not find peace of mind.
