The Kuochi Children's Village is a new concept in care for orphans as the pictures of the modern and spacious accommodations at the top of the page might indicate. The village, established six years ago in Taoyuan in northern Taiwan, has 16 houses each equipped with modern amenities and run by a trained and well-educated nurse who acts as a surrogate mother for the orphans living in her charge. The children not only regard her as "mother" but also look upon each other as brothers and sisters. Some of the nurses have babies to look after, such as "Mother" (left) who is seen feeding her one-year-old "daughter."
The village includes a kindergarten a swimming pool, a basketball court and a medical center. After graduating from the kindergarten, children leave the village to attend a neighborhood school. Mother Shieh (right in top picture) and a college student from Central University help two children with their school lessons.
Mother Kuo (left) started to take care of Hsiao-chi 17 days after he was born. The boy, who was found abandoned (also seen center), is now the favorite child of the family. Mother Kuo has received from her "children" a birthday card which reads: "The most beautiful thing in the sky is a star. The most beautiful thing on the earth is our mother." Mother Hsieh who has worked six years at the village, seems contended with two of her older children (right).
