Night Markets, live stages, and the open road
Lee Che-chin, chairman of the Taiwan Triathlon Association and organizer of the Taipei Starlight Marathon for 12 consecutive years, notes that the event’s greatest appeal is its relaxed nature. Instead of forcing themselves out of bed at 4:00 a.m. for a grueling race, runners can enjoy a leisurely competition accompanied by cool evening breezes.
Rather than focusing solely on pushing physical limits, starlight marathons across Taiwan emphasize showcasing the distinct nocturnal atmosphere of local cities and towns. Organizers often integrate bustling night markets and live stage performances, transforming the races into vibrant festivals. This trend has deep roots: the southern city of Tainan pioneered the concept with the Eternal Golden Castle Starlight Marathon back in 2011, while Taipei’s own starlight run has been going strong since 2014.
The momentum continues on May 30, when the coastal town of Chenggong in Taitung County will host its first-ever night race: the Sanxiantai Starlight Marathon. This event will guide runners along Taiwan's majestic eastern coastline, allowing them to gaze up at a brilliant starry sky and experience the town’s unique evening charm. Later in the year, the Chishang Night Run, scheduled for October 3, will invite visitors to immerse themselves in the region's famous idyllic pace. The race combines Chishang’s breathtaking night skies with local tourism, offering a perfect blend of exercise and pastoral beauty.
Major corporations, including China Airlines and Puma, have also embraced night races as a dynamic way to promote healthy living and brand culture. On March 28, the 2026 Puma Night Run seamlessly blended sports with trendy nightlife, featuring themed food trucks and a neon stage party. Looking ahead, the 2026 China Airlines Marathon Starlight Night Run is set for October 31. Luring participants with grand prizes like free flight tickets, all race categories sold out within just two hours of registration opening.
