How Do Hot-Air Balloons Fly? Five Things You May Not Know
1. Hot-air balloons have no steering wheel Pilots cannot directly control their course. Instead, they ascend or descend to find a suitable layer of wind and drift with it. Ballooning is not about conquering the wind but learning to listen to it and move with it.
2. Early mornings and evenings are prime flying times Strong winds and daytime thermal convection are major concerns. As a general guideline, conditions are more suitable when surface winds are below 7 knots (about 13 kilometers per hour), the temperature is no higher than 32°C, and there is no rain.
3. A pilot balloon goes up first Before takeoff, pilots release a helium-filled pilot balloon, known as a pibal, and observe wind conditions at different altitudes to determine whether they are suitable for flight.
4. Not all special-shape balloons carry passengers Because character-shaped balloons are structurally complex and heavier, many are used mainly for displays and performances. Standard teardrop-shaped balloons are generally used for passenger rides.
5. Tethered rides and free flight On a tethered ride, ropes secure the balloon in place as it rises and descends. In free flight, the balloon is completely untethered and travels with the wind.
