The conservation of historic artifacts is a profession that requires expertise in fine arts, history, and science, along with knowledge and skills accumulated over many years, and unusual patience and perseverance.
In this month’s cover story we look at the craftsmanship of guqin maker and conservator Lin Li-cheng, and explore the world of paper restorer Wu Jer-ruey. We also hear from young conservators Fan Ting-fu and Lai Chih Hao, who have returned to Taiwan after completing studies abroad. They share how they apply what they have learned to bring back the magnificence of cultural artifacts.
The innovative capabilities of Taiwanese industry are unfolding at a rapid pace. In response to the world trend toward “Industry 4.0,” the government has proposed the “5+2 Industrial Innovation Plan,” in which smart machinery is a key focus of development. From aerospace to manufacturing to industry‡academia cooperation, this wave of industrial transformation will lay the foundations for Taiwan’s future prosperity.
For example, the electric supercar “Miss R” has both off-road and racetrack capabilities and boasts drive motors that can deliver over 1,300 horsepower. It uses Taiwan’s manufacturing advantages of “small volume, diversity, quality, and flexibility,” and also integrates art in the form of calligraphy by Tong Yang-tze, demonstrating Taiwan’s abundant creativity.
Another thing for Taiwan to be proud of is Chang Gung University’s International Master of Science Program in Reconstructive Microsurgery. The overseas doctors who come to train and study at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital spread its cutting-edge achievements in microsurgery throughout the world, greatly raising Taiwan’s international visibility.
Moving stories are played out in every corner of Taiwan. Tang Nu Huong, a Vietnamese woman who married into a Taiwanese home, has found her place in society and hope in her life through family, work, and volunteer service. Meanwhile Zhao Xiulan, from Thailand, has used cuisine to charm the palates of many epicures and to overcome all manner of difficulties in life.
The movement against food waste includes a drive to turn foodstuffs discarded during food processing into delicious dishes. These efforts are not only environmentally friendly, but impact areas including eco-friendly cultivation, food safety, youth entrepreneurship, and concern for the elderly.
On the little island of Xiaoliuqiu off the coast of Pingtung County, the “beach currency” launched by HiiN Studio to help protect sea turtles and the environment rewards people for cleaning beaches and avoiding single-use plastic products.
