Taiwan's Machinery Exports

The 10-day machinery exhibition organized by the China External Trade Development Council ended successfully in Taipei recently. Manufacturers who participated received on-the-spot orders worth US$46 million from the 1,278 foreign buyers who visited the exhibition. From a level of US$690 million last year, the value of Taiwan's machinery exports is expected to rise to US$850 million this year and to US$1 billion next year. Because of their reasonable prices and high quality, Taiwan-made machinery products have become more popular in advanced as well as developing countries in recent years. To achieve further progress in the machinery industry, the government has worked out guidelines as follows: To unite manufacturers in their efforts to increase production and improve management techniques; to introduce foreign techniques and encourage research; to remove duties on imported research and experimental equipment; to train more technicians and increase their pay; to ensure supplies of high quality raw materials to make machinery from the China Steel Corp. and other steel producers; and to help manufacturers obtain low-interest loans in sufficient quantities, as well as investments from banks and other financial institutions.
