In order to review the combat readiness of the Republic of China's armed forces an eight-day exercise "Han Hsing" was held recently. The purpose of the exercise is to give extensive training to the army. We have employed modern military technology and are constantly improving our defense requirements. We are trying to rely more on our own armaments than imported ones. Part of the "Han Hsing" exercise was designed to test new Taiwan made weapons.
The most important thing about the exercise was that it represented the first time that all three branches of the armed forces cooperated in a joint demonstration of firepower. It was one of the largest demonstrations ever held in the ROC With more than 50,000 people taking part and 98 percent of them being reservists. The exercise showed the high level of discipline and morale in the ROC's armed forces.
The last day of the demonstration was the main part of the program. Called "Rapid Thunder", this exercise showed that the Republic of China does not spare any effort when it comes to the quality and unity of the armed forces. Chief of the General Staff, Gen. Hau Pei-tsun, in Penghu for the demonstration, said that President Chiang Ching-kuo has pointed out that it is most important to stress quality and unity in the training of the armed forces.
The "Rapid Thunder" demonstration included an army unit of tanks firing rockets at a target area, self-propelled artillery pieces firing, Air Force jets strafing target areas with napalm and bombs, and destroyer formations firing depth charges.
The exercise lends confidence to the people of the Republic of China, while helping to show the rest of the world that the nation is prepared to fend off any invasion. This exercise also demonstrates that the ROC possesses a modern army with a high fighting spirit.
