The seventh annual William Jones Cup Basketball Invitational Tournament held June 15-July 15, was a clash of teams from around the world in a not-soon-to-be-forgotten demonstration of exciting player skills. Competitors flew in from all areas of the globe; 18 of the 29 teams were national representatives.
The teams were top-notch. The Peruvian, Salvadoran, and American teams, for example, have all previously held international titles. Spectators who couldn't fit into the jammed Changhua Stadium could be seen spilling out the doors, watching from the outside.
As always, the most exciting matches were the upsets; one such local crowd pleaser was the Chinese win over a highly-favored Japanese team by 28 points. Many local fans called it the best Japanese-Chinese match in the past 30 years.
The players expressed delight at being invited to the Tournament in Taiwan this year, most of them commenting on the beauty of the island and the friendly reception from its people. The Malaysians invited the Republic of China to send a team to a soon-to-be-held Malaysian Tournament.
The Jones Invitational is a landmark tournament, an excellent example of the role of sports exchanges in fostering international friendship, understanding...and athletic skills.
