With the arrival of smart networks and the post-convergence world, the Internet of Things and smart industry have become important themes for the move toward new digital manufacturing.
Taiwan has a comprehensive industrial value chain comprising up-, mid-, and downstream firms, with powerful cluster effects and strong competitiveness. In recent years various efforts have emerged to integrate technologies from different fields, such as the combination of smart healthcare and smart clothing, technological applications in the green building industry, artistic and cultural performances in a 5G environment, and the digital transformation of the food and beverage sector in response to Covid-19. These developments combine innovation with entrepreneurship. In this month’s Cover Story we explore some of the magical new ways of living through interdisciplinary technology.
Staying in the area of high-tech manufacturing and entrepreneurship, we also look at some patented technologies which won Innovation Awards at the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show, visit with participants in the Women Entrepreneurship Program sponsored by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, and learn how the Taiwan Climate Partnership, founded by eight of Taiwan’s leading high-tech firms, is demonstrating to the world Taiwan’s programs and commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions in the tech sector. We also report on domestic R&D in electric vehicle chargers. Overall, this month’s issue has a strong high-tech feel.
This May, Taiwan Panorama held a forum at Fu Jen Catholic University on our recently published book Angels of Love: Catholicism in Taiwan. The event was a great success, with valuable contributions from participants including the Most Reverend Thomas Chung An-zu, Archbishop of Taipei; Chen Chien-jen, academician of the Academia Sinica and former ROC vice president; and Chen Fang-chung, dean of FJCU’s College of Liberal Arts.
At the forum, speakers held in-depth discussions and shared stories in a number of areas, including the history of Catholicism in Taiwan, the core values and training of international clergy in Taiwan, issues in the academic study of Catholicism, and differing missionary approaches in different eras. The event was livestreamed to the Internet by Taiwan Panorama, FJCU, and the Kuangchi Program Service.
The book brings together 20 articles related to Catholicism published in Taiwan Panorama since 1976, documenting the loving contributions made to Taiwan by Catholic clergy and members of religious orders who came here from around the world. It is bilingual in Chinese and English and includes many precious photographs that record rare images and moving stories. We welcome interested readers to visit our website and order a copy.
