The foreign trade of the Republic of China has improved in 1976. It amounted to US$7,142.7 million January through June, according to customs reports. This figure showed an increase of US$1,998 million, 38 per cent over that of the same period of last year. The total of exports against imports showed a surplus of US$125.7 million. According to the foreign exchange statistics of the Central Bank of China, which are figured on a different basis from that of customs reports, the ROC has a favorable trade balance of US$469.5 million.
According to customs estimates, the exports for July were more than US$800 million, an increase of US$180 million or 30% over those of June, 1976. Based on the current situation, the estimate of the total ROC foreign trade for 1976 has been raised from the original target of US$13,500 million to US$15,000 million. The favorable trade balance is estimated at US$300 million. Meanwhile, as the foreign trade has turned for the better, the volume of cargo loading and unloading at the airports and seaports of Taiwan increased between 39.96% and 54.67% over the same period of 1975. The foreign trade is closely related to the domestic economic growth. The government and the industry continue to work for further development. They are confident of their economic future.
